Getting There

The normal route is to fly to Split and take the car ferry to Stari Grad, which goes seven times a day from late June through August, six times a day in May, June and September and four times a day at other times. The ferry takes just under 2 hours.

There is a catamaran service on weekdays which leaves Split at 13.00 (returning 14.45), taking 1 hour.

The ferry terminal is about 800 m from Nine Olives. We will arrange a taxi to collect you. The biggest supermarket is at the ferry terminal. You can do a shop on arrival if you like.

You can check times and book tickets at the following link (enter Split to Stari Grad): Ferry Timetable  It is advisable to book at peak times, especially if you have a car.

There are also catamaran services from Dubrovnik, Split and Split Airport (Resnik Dock) to Hvar Town, which is about 25 minutes from the house by taxi. They are operated by Jadrolinija, Kapetan Luka (Krilo), and TP Line.

The quickest way to get to the house is by taxi boat from Resnik.  There is more information about that elsewhere on this website.

There are flights from many European cities to Split. There is a list elsewhere on the website.

A taxi from the airport to the ferry costs about €50. UBER, which is cheaper, works well in Split (not on the island). They pick up at a bus stop on the road that passes the front of the airport.

An airport bus goes direct to the ferry, taking 30 minutes. The ticket costs 10 euros.

It is not necessary to have a car in Stari Grad, but having one gives some extra flexibility. It is perhaps best to hire from Split airport if you want one for your whole stay. The ferries to Stari Grad take cars.

You can, alternatively, hire a car in Stari Grad. SunCity, about 100 m from the house, is a convenient choice.

Split itself is very interesting and pleasant to visit. The old town was originally built as the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian and is a World Heritage site. There are left luggage places at the ferry terminal where you can deposit your bags if you have some time to wait for the ferry. It is easy to walk from there to the old town if there is time to wait before the ferry sails.

Bokeria is a great place to eat if you have some time.

There are many nice places to stay in Split.

Radisson Blu. My favourite. It is quite distant from the Old Town, but it is a nice walk along the seafront. It has a beach club, nice views and excellent indoor and outdoor pools. There is an excellent restaurant nearby called BOÌ€ME (reservation advised).

Heritage Hotel Santa Lucia: On the main square at the centre of the old town. They have parking spaces outside the old town and an excellent rooftop terrace where you can have drinks.

Art Hotel. A lower cost option about a 10 minute walk to the edge of the old town. They have a nice rooftop pool and big sunbathing terrace. Onsite free car parking.

Combining a visit with Dubrovnik is also a good option, especially if you hire a car there (or go from Split to Dubrovnik or vice versa). There is a ferry from north of Dubrovnik to Sućuraj, on the east end of Hvar. The drive from there to Stari Grad is exceptionally scenic, albeit a little hair-raising at times.

There are daily catamaran services from Dubrovnik to Hvar Town from April to October operated by Jadrolinija, Kapetan Luka (Krilo), and TP Line. The journey time is c.3 hours 20 minutes to 3 hours and 50 minutes.

There are also daily ferries from Bari in Italy to Split during the summer months.

Private Taxi Boat from Split Airport

This is the quickest way to get to Nine Olives, taking about an hour door to door.

Split Airport is by the sea and there is a dock a short distance from it.

Dalmatia Express can take you directly from there to Stari Grad (and back).

They have a choice of three boats.

1. A big boat with a cabin, indoor/outdoor boat deck, toilet facilities, shock absorber seats. It is the best boat in the area. 880 euros one way for the boat (2024).

2. Big 12 meters boat with cabin. 750 euros one way for the boat.

3. Smaller 9 meters open boat with biggest outboard Yamaha engine. 460 euros one way for the boat.

They will arrange transport from the airport to the dock (a 2 minute journey). There is a supplement of 30 euros if more than 8 passengers (for 2 vans).

Their boats have radar and can do night rides.

They will wait if the plane is delayed without additional charge.

Faros Boats is a company based in Stari Grad that also provides boat transfers (you can also hire boats from them).

Blucay is another option. +385 95 509 1150
